Pressure Washer Pump Replacement Guide

If you have read my article The Pump is the MOST IMPORTANT PART of any Pressure Washer you will understand that the pump is the most critical component of a pressure washer. Most of the cheaper pressure washers will have a Axial Cam pump while the more expensive models will have a high quality Triplex pump. One of my readers asked the question: Can you replace and axial cam pump with a Triplex pump?

The answer to this is yes it is totally possible. It may be an expensive task to undertake and most definitely should not be done unless you have a broken axial cam pump that needs to be repaired.

So if you are thinking about replacing an Axial cam pump with a Triplex you will want to make sure that you check out your engine manual. the instruction manual should give you detailed information about your current pump as well as supplied drawings and measurements. Once you have the information you can better find a Triplex pump for replacement.

Some of the more important things to look for include the orientation of the pump in regards to the engine and how it is mounted. Basically you will need to see how it lines up once mounted to fit your current engine. You will also need to match up the PSI rating as well as the GPM rating so that you do not have something that is too powerful for your engine to handle. Other crucial information you need to match up the diameter of the shaft and know if it is solid or hollow.

Sometimes a universal Triplex pump will work but like I said to make absolute sure the pump will work before you buy it is to measure everything. There are a ton of universal pressure washer pumps available to buy. Just make sure you get one with the correct PSI and determine if you need a vertical mounted or horizontal mounted pump. If you are just looking to fix or replace your pump, a cheap universal model make work for you. If you are looking to upgrade to a model that is a high quality and will last a long time be sure to look for a Triplex pump.

The question always comes up, “Should I buy a new pressure washer or just replace the pump?” To answer this depends on what your intentions are. Almost all of the electric pressure washers have non-replaceable pumps. There is just no way around that. You may be able to make slight repairs on them but you will not be able to swap them out for a higher quality one. You will also need to determine the cost of a new pressure washer and it’s advantages over replacing the pump on an older model. Maybe you want a more powerful unit.

Replacing the pump is a great way to extend the life of your pressure washer. As long as the engine, hose, and other components are in tip top shape you will be able to use your pressure washer for many years to come. There is a wide range in prices and you have to decided if you want the convenience of a low maintenance electric pressure washer with less power vs a gas pressure washer with lots of power that will require you to maintain the engine.

I have listed 2 of the most important points that you should consider when purchasing a pressure washer.

Value your Needs. 1st things first. Decide on what type of projects you are going to be doing. Small household tasks can be done by a basic electric pressure washer. Simple cleaning around the house does not require a machine with a ton of power and specs. A lower cost electric machine will be able to get those jobs done. However, if you are looking to do jobs faster and clean deep stains you may need more power. Take pressure washing a concrete driveway for example. An electric pressure washer usually does not have enough power to get deep stains out of concrete. You will need something with more PSI, and to get more PSI you need to have a gas engine. 2800+ PSI is recommend to power wash a concrete driveway.
Are you going to be using the pressure washer for you business? You may want to get a commercial grade unit right away. They have higher quality parts and are built to last a lot longer than consumer grade pressure washers.
PSI and other Features. This goes with valuing you needs, but you have to determine what type of job you will be doing and how much PSI you need to complete it. Remember it is important that you choose the best washer you can afford. Again, you may be able to get away with an electric pressure washer to clean you deck and car, but you may need more power to completely strip the old paint from your deck in order to reseal it. You also need to look at the GPM. The higher Gallons Per Minute the machine is rated for the faster you will be able to complete the task. On the other hand the lower the GPM the more water you are saving. Pressure washers are able to produce much higher flows than your standard garden hose all while using less water.
Other features you will want to examine are the quality of the pump, engine, and overall design. You will also want to pay attention to how heavy the machine is and how compact it is for storing.

The pump is actually the most important part of any pressure washer, and will most likely be the fist thing to fail. It will probably fail way before the engine, so do not get hung up on what type of engine you are getting. Focus on the specs that you need; PSI, GPM, and then check out the Pump. Most small engines these days are very well built and they are built to last.

When purchasing a pressure washer be sure to look at what pump you are getting. A Pro-Grade Triplex Pump will last up to 4X longer than Axial Cam pumps, however you going to pay more upfront for this. If you plan on using your pressure washer a lot, I highly recommend you get one with a Triplex pump. Now if you are just using the pressure washer a few times a year, an Axial or other brand will probably work just fine for you.

Did your pump die on your current pressure washer and now you need a replacement pump? I highly recommend you check out the Generac Universal Replacement Pump. It is low cost and will work for any pressure washer.

Here is a list of pumps that you will likely see when researching your pressure washers:

Triplex: Triplex pumps are the top of the line and are highly desired in pressure washers. They are heavy duty and will last about 4x longer than your standard Axial Cam pump. Almost all of the higher end contractor quality washers will have this pump, but again you are paying a lot more for this. Being that they last 4x longer than the Axial Cam pump you can expect a Triplex pump to last around 2400-2500 hours.

Axial Cam: These are the pumps that you will see in most of the budget gas pressure washers. They are an excellent pump still but do not compare to Triplex when is comes to average runtime. These will last around 600-700 hours and most likely fail long before your main engine will.

Wobble: These pumps are mainly used on cheap electric pressure washers. They are not replaceable so if you purchase an electric power washer that has this pump you will have to replace the entire pressure washer. These pumps are only rated to last around 300 hours, but you are probably only paying less than $150 for an electric power washer. Some of the more expensive pumps cost over $300.

Whatever you decided on will most likely coincide with the price range you are expecting to pay. Do Not purchase a power washer for over $500 that does not have a Triplex pump. I feeling is that you would be getting ripped off. Paying that kind of money for a power washer that has a cheap pump is just a bad idea. Yeah it may be 4000 PSI or something but remember the pump is the most import part of a power washer.
